Agriculture Bank of China’s dual Hong Kong and Shanghai IPO of US$19.3bn is amazing the world. Yet size doesn’t always translate into strength and competitiveness. Aware of this, the large Chinese commercial banks and trying to diversify their balance sheets, which means they also have to take on new staff within emerging business lines.
Traditionally backed by the Chinese government and serving state-owned enterprises, commercial banks routinely fill senior positions through internal promotion or even government appointment. But recently they have been broadening the scope of their hiring.
“It seems that large commercial banks are open to recruit externally for new business functions,” says Stephen He, senior consultant, banking and finance, Consult Group. “I have recruited into several major commercial banks in China.”
